There is no \u201cmigrate\u201d button in the solution. Migrating from Drupal 7 to a newer version de facto means designing, coding, and setting up a new website.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if you migrate to a newer version, you are purchasing a new website in a newer version of Drupal. This typically costs around <strong>DKK 200,000\u2013600,000.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"188\" height=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Frame-1-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62434\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hvader\">What does \u201cEnd of Life\u201d mean in a Drupal context?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a so-called \u201cmajor\u201d version of Drupal reaches \u201cend of life\u201d (EOL), it specifically means that the Drupal community\u2014core developers, the security team, and other Drupal contributors\u2014stops delivering the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Security updates to the core code for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drupal.org\/about\/drupal-7\/d7eol\/partners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relevant version<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bug fixes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axelerant.com\/blog\/drupal-7-end-of-life-a-guide-to-next-steps?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compatibility updates<\/a> to the core code.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support and maintenance of the \u201ccontrib\u201d modules and themes that only support the relevant version. When module developers stop at that version, new vulnerabilities or incompatibilities will not be fixed. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alignment with modern technologies and requirements (such as newer <a href=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/en\/?p=66742\">PHP versions<\/a>, databases, libraries) \u2013 because the version is no longer being enabled for this by the Drupal community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mt-blog-post-text-box mt-blog-post-text-box\"><div class=\"mt-blog-post-text-box__inner page-container\"><div class=\"mt-blog-post-text-box__box\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In short: <\/strong>Running a website on an EOL version means that, in the short or long term, you will end up with a solution that no longer works and becomes a burden for your organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only question is when you get there, and that depends on your solution\u2019s features, <a href=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/en\/web-products\/integrations\/\">integrations<\/a>, etc.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drupal end-of-life dates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Drupal version going \u201cEOL\u201d is not a new concept. Until you are forced to switch. <\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Option 3. <\/strong><br\/>Switch to another CMS<\/td><td>You choose to leave Drupal entirely and migrate to another content management system (<a href=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/en\/cms-should-not-determine-your-choice-of-web-agency\/\">CMS<\/a>) such as WordPress.<\/td><td>You will need to learn a new CMS (unless you already know it).<\/td><td>Depending on the design and complexity, it typically costs between <strong><span class=\"mt-text-highlight\">DKK 160,000\u2013<br\/>300,000<\/span><\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Practical steps<\/strong> regardless of which solution you choose<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First, carry out a <strong>technical mapping of your current<\/strong> Drupal 7 site: which modules are used, which themes, which database, which integrations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Define a requirements specification:<\/strong> Which features are need-to-have and nice-to-have, and are there new things you want the solution to be able to do?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Perform a content audit:<\/strong> what should stay, what can be removed?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Set a budget:<\/strong> what does an upgrade or migration require, and when should it happen?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make a decision and set a plan:<\/strong> when do you move to \u201clight status\u201d (no major changes), and when do you do the actual migration work?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Choose supplier\/partner<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Allocate time for testing and launch<\/strong>: When you upgrade or migrate, you should test functionality, performance, security, and user experience.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"konsekvenserne\">What are the consequences if you do nothing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a website that still runs on Drupal 7\u2014or another expired version\u2014without taking action, here are some of the most important risks and consequences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mt-accordion mt-accordion mtSpacing-top- mtSpacing-bottom-\"><div class=\"mt-accordion__inner\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-mt-accordion-item mt-accordion-item\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__title-wrapper\"><h3 class=\"mt-accordion-item__title\">Security risk<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content-wrapper\" style=\"display:none\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without security updates, your website is an attractive target for hackers and automated attacks. If a vulnerability is discovered in core or a module, it will not be fixed by the community. This means a higher likelihood of:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Data breaches and leakage of sensitive data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Abuse of the website (e.g., as a botnet, spam generator, or phishing site).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Destruction or alteration of content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mt-accordion-item mt-accordion-item\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__title-wrapper\"><h3 class=\"mt-accordion-item__title\">Legislation and compliance<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content-wrapper\" style=\"display:none\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your organisation handles personal data or is subject to requirements such as PCI, HIPAA, or similar, using an unpatched software platform can put you out of compliance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drupal itself warns that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drupal.org\/about\/drupal-7\/d7eol\/partners?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">websites that handle sensitive data or are subject to regulations \u2026 will likely fail to meet compliance standards, as EOL software is not considered secure<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mt-accordion-item mt-accordion-item\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__title-wrapper\"><h3 class=\"mt-accordion-item__title\">Operations, performance, and technology<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content-wrapper\" style=\"display:none\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As server environments, PHP versions, databases, and libraries evolve, an EOL platform will experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Compatibility issues: for example, modules that no longer work with newer PHP versions or databases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of theme and module updates means new features cannot be added, and existing ones may break.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased <a href=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/en\/a-different-understanding-and-approach-to-technical-debt\/\">technical debt<\/a>: The longer you wait to migrate or upgrade, the larger the task becomes\u2014and the more expensive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hosting challenges: Many hosting providers stop supporting older versions or PHP environments for EOL software.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mt-accordion-item mt-accordion-item\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__title-wrapper\"><h3 class=\"mt-accordion-item__title\">Financial consequences<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content-wrapper\" style=\"display:none\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If something goes wrong, such as hacking or downtime, the costs are often far higher than if the system had been maintained. It is the same as it being more expensive to buy a new set of teeth than to brush your teeth twice a day. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You lose the potential to leverage new features and efficiencies\u2014and thus branding or business advantages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Risk of reputational damage if the site is compromised.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All in all, ignoring EOL status is very risky. It does not necessarily mean the site stops working from day one, but the likelihood of issues increases significantly, and the cost of fixing problems rises accordingly. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"alternativer\">What are my alternatives to an expensive migration?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is very simple; you can switch to another <a href=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/en\/what-is-a-cms-and-what-should-you-be-aware-of\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"37329\">CMS<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes\u2014either you migrate to a newer version of Drupal (purchase a new Drupal website).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or you purchase a new website in another CMS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only other CMSs we consider serious candidates competing with Drupal are <a href=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/en\/wordpress-the-obvious-choice\/\">WordPress<\/a> and Umbraco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mt-blog-post-text-box mt-blog-post-text-box\"><div class=\"mt-blog-post-text-box__inner page-container\"><div class=\"mt-blog-post-text-box__box\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you are leaving Drupal because you do not want your version to reach end of life in the future, note that <a href=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/en\/umbraco-8-end-of-life-so-what-is-next-considerations-and-alternatives-for-your-cms\/\">Umbraco<\/a> does as well.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Benefits of WordPress<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mt-accordion mt-accordion mtSpacing-top- mtSpacing-bottom-\"><div class=\"mt-accordion__inner\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-mt-accordion-item mt-accordion-item\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__title-wrapper\"><h3 class=\"mt-accordion-item__title\">Large ecosystem<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content-wrapper\" style=\"display:none\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WordPress is the world\u2019s most widely used CMS, and its large ecosystem provides access to thousands of themes and plugins. This makes it easier to add features and integration options without having to build everything from scratch. At the same time, the large community helps ensure the platform is continuously improved and kept secure.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mt-accordion-item mt-accordion-item\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__title-wrapper\"><h3 class=\"mt-accordion-item__title\">Ease of use<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content-wrapper\" style=\"display:none\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many marketing and communications managers, WordPress is intuitive to work with. It rarely requires technical expertise to update content or adjust pages, which reduces day-to-day dependence on developers. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mt-accordion-item mt-accordion-item\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__title-wrapper\"><h3 class=\"mt-accordion-item__title\">Price level<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content-wrapper\" style=\"display:none\"><div class=\"mt-accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Migrating to WordPress can often be more cost-effective than upgrading to newer versions of Drupal.
