What is keyword stuffing?<\/h1><\/div>

Keyword stuffing is when you try to get a page to rank for a specific keyword by repeating it far too many times. It is the SEO tactic that worked a little too well in 2010\u2014and which today is countered by all of Google\u2019s updates. <\/p><\/div>\n\n

Examples of keyword stuffing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is easy to spot\u2014and even easier to break out in hives from. Here are a few caricatured examples: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can find cheap men\u2019s shoes here. If you are looking for cheap men\u2019s shoes online, we have the best cheap men\u2019s shoes among all cheap men\u2019s shoes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you feel like you are getting dumber from reading it\u2014do not worry, Google hates it too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Write semantic copy instead<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Instead of grinding the same keyword in again and again, write like a human. Use synonyms, related concepts, and natural variations in language. This is called semantic SEO<\/a>\u2014and it works because it helps both the user and Google understand what the page is about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not need to write \u201ccheap men\u2019s shoes\u201d<\/em> seven times. Write \u201cshoes on sale\u201d, \u201cgreat prices on men\u2019s shoes\u201d, \u201cmen\u2019s shoes that will not break the bank\u201d\u2014you know, the way you would actually say it. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Why does semantic SEO work better?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is not just something we say. Google has used machine learning and NLP (natural language understanding) since the Hummingbird update<\/a> back in 2013. It changed the game from \u201cexact keyword\u201d to intent and context<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then RankBrain came in 2015\u2014and most recently BERT and MUM, which basically make Google better at understanding how<\/em> words relate to each other rather than just which<\/em> words are used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now we also have Google AI Overviews<\/a><\/strong>, which, frankly, do not even look at your keywords if you miss the context. Here, it is semantic depth<\/em> that determines whether you get shown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And according to data from GEO<\/a> analyses (AI Overviews performance tracking), pages with keyword stuffing perform significantly worse\u2014both in impressions and clicks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you get penalized for keyword stuffing? Honestly <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes, you can be penalized<\/em>\u2014but not necessarily with a red Google warning light and a fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In practice, what happens is that your pages simply do not get shown. Google<\/a> chooses someone who writes better. Because the algorithm can see that keyword stuffing rarely helps the user\u2014and Google exists to help the user<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So you will not necessarily be deindexed<\/em>, but you will be passed over. And that is punishment enough, is it not? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

SO<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stop writing like a robot. Use your language\u2014and give Google enough semantics to understand what you mean, and give users something they actually want to read. This also means you should consider your readability score and limit the amount of wall-of-text. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When do you \u201cstuff\u201d keyword density?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The short answer: When your text sounds like you wrote it for Google\u2014not for people<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no longer a magic percentage for keyword density. Forget everything about \u201c2.5% is the golden number\u201d. That was 2000s SEO<\/a>. Today, it is about whether your text is natural<\/em>. If you repeat the same word 10 times on one page and it makes the text feel stiff, forced, or artificial\u2014then you have a problem. Not necessarily because Google penalizes you directly, but because it will show someone who writes better instead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So you are not \u201cstuffing\u201d because you used your keyword too much<\/em> in absolute terms\u2014but because you used it in a way that makes the experience worse for the user. And that is what Google cares about. <\/p>\n\n\n <\/div>\n
