Situations where a URL no longer exists typically include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Renaming the title of an article or a blog post and, in that connection, also choosing to rename the URL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A service or product you no longer offer and have therefore deleted from your website<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moving an article or a blog post from one category to another<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Getting a new website with a different URL structure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"736\" src=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Komplekse-tekster-1024x736.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Komplekse-tekster-1024x736.png 1024w, https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Komplekse-tekster-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Komplekse-tekster-768x552.png 768w, https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Komplekse-tekster.png 1848w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, there are a number of other situations where it can be convenient to redirect the URL to another one, which we have also touched on briefly in my tips. Here are some of them: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Redirect www to non-www, or vice versa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Redirect https to http, or vice versa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Redirect alternative <a href=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/en\/the-marketing-dictionary\/#domaene\">domains<\/a> to the primary domain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Redirect to country-specific domains depending on where the site is accessed from<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Redirect a simpler URL to the actual URL<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hvorfor\">Why can it be a problem not to redirect?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three main reasons why you need to ensure you redirect correctly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/en\/what-is-google\/hvad-er-google-2\/\">Google<\/a> may think that two versions of your website exist and interpret it as <a href=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/en\/do-not-let-duplicate-content-kill-your-site\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"64195\">duplicate content<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may lose the value of the external and <a href=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/en\/the-marketing-dictionary\/#internallink\">internal links<\/a> pointing to the page in question. Search engines may also continue to believe the page exists if links point to it. When they then find nothing on the page, it can negatively affect your ranking in the search results.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your customers may risk visiting your page in vain and leaving immediately because they do not find the content they expected.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hvordan\">How do you redirect correctly?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We will not go into how to redirect a URL, because it can vary depending on which system you use for your website, which server you run on, etc.\u2014and it usually also requires some technical skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, we will briefly explain which type of redirect you should use (as there are several), so you can easily search online for how to do it or ensure that whoever helps you also does it correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First and foremost, it is important to redirect to a relevant page. If you do not redirect to a page that is identical to the old one, make sure it covers the same topic and possibly also targets the same keywords. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a last resort, you can redirect to something that is not exactly the same, but it is worth doing it properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mt-blog-post-text-box mt-blog-post-text-box\"><div class=\"mt-blog-post-text-box__inner page-container\"><div class=\"mt-blog-post-text-box__box\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Avoid, as far as possible, redirecting to the homepage or other general pages unless it makes the most sense.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, redirecting to the homepage is better than nothing, but if you can redirect to a product or an article similar to the one you are redirecting from, it is much better, and you will get far more out of it for both your customers and search engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"736\" src=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bliv-valideret-udefra-1024x736.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62747\" srcset=\"https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bliv-valideret-udefra-1024x736.png 1024w, https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bliv-valideret-udefra-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bliv-valideret-udefra-768x552.png 768w, https:\/\/morningtrain.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Bliv-valideret-udefra.png 1848w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have written an article about why it is good to buy proper running shoes and, for one reason or another, you move the page, make sure the new page contains the same article\u2014or at least that it is still about buying proper running shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you had a pair of running shoes in your webshop and you no longer sell them, redirect to an article that describes a good alternative to those shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alternatively, you can redirect to another pair of running shoes similar to the ones you no longer have, or to the running shoes category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hvilke\"><strong>Which redirect should you use?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to use a <a href=\"https:\/\/morningscore.io\/seo-glossary\/#StatusCode301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">301 redirect<\/a> when a URL is moved permanently.
