See through the hype: The limitations of AI

Welcome to the future! A time when robots are not only something from science fiction novels, but a reality. That is how I could have started, but there are plenty of posts like that, so in this one I will focus more on the limitations associated with AI.

Do not let the hype run away with you

Artificial intelligence, or AI as it is commonly called, is on everyone’s lips.
It is everywhere, from your smartphone assistant to your smart home devices, from “self-driving” cars to sophisticated robots. But what exactly is AI? Why is it such a big deal? And most importantly, what are the limitations of AI?

Before we get too carried away, let us take a step back and look at the basics. It is important to understand that AI is not a magical entity with unlimited powers. It has its strengths and its limitations. Like any other technology, AI has its own challenges, and we need to be aware of them in order to fully appreciate its potential.

The purpose of this article is to cut through the hype and understand the real limitations of AI in today’s digital age. When you have finished reading, the hope is that you will have a broader understanding of what AI can and cannot do, as well as the issues it faces.

Shall we get started?

The basic principles: What is AI?

At its core, artificial intelligence is a field within computer science that aims to create machines that mimic human intelligence. From speech recognition, learning, planning, and problem-solving to pattern recognition, AI is an effective tool. However, it is not about getting machines to “think” like humans. Instead, it is about enabling machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence.

AI is divided into two main types—Narrow AI, which is designed to perform a specific task (such as facial recognition or voice commands), and Generative AI, which in theory can perform any intellectual task that a human can. This also includes what is called an “LLM” (Large Language Model).

What we are seeing around us at the moment are LLMs. While it is a fascinating concept, Generative AI is still in its infancy.

AI is a complex but fascinating field, and it is developing at lightning speed. But like any other technology, it also has its limitations.

The hype around AI

The world is captivated by various AI models, and rightly so. It “revolutionises” industries, makes our lives easier, and opens doors to opportunities we would not have dared to hope for. But as with anything new, there will always be those who see challenges or problems instead. This has, among other things, led to statements such as “AI is going to replace humans” or “AI can do everything a human can, and more.”

And yes, that can certainly sound frightening! But how accurate is it, really?

AI is extremely good at specific tasks, but it is still far from being able to replicate human intelligence in its entirety. The limitations of AI are often downplayed amid all the hype. However, we will take a closer look at them below, because there are plenty of challenges and limitations!

The human brain vs. AI

The human brain is a marvel of nature. It is capable of creativity, empathy, understanding, learning, and much more. AI, on the other hand, is man-made. It is able to process information quickly, work tirelessly, and perform tasks accurately.

While AI excels at tasks involving data analysis and pattern recognition, the human brain is superior when it comes to understanding context, making judgements, feeling emotions, and being creative. The human brain and AI are different in their own ways, and each has its strengths and weaknesses.

In short, AI lacks the very essence of what makes us human—our ability to think, reason, feel, create, and ask questions.

The real limitations of AI

Although AI has seen significant advances, it is still far from achieving the level of complexity that the human brain possesses. First of all, AI lacks the ability to understand context in the same way humans do. It can analyse data and make decisions based on it, but it cannot understand the motivation behind those decisions.

AI is also not creative as such, and yes, you may have seen it “create” art or “compose” music, but it can only do so based on predefined algorithms built on the data it has been trained on.

That is perhaps one of the most important things to understand when it comes to AI.
If, for example, you ask it to generate text based on information that is newer than the dataset it was trained on, it simply will not be able to give you an answer.

This also means that if the data the AI is trained on contains errors, the results will most likely contain errors as well.

Ethical considerations of AI

AI raises several ethical considerations. From privacy concerns to questions of accountability, from bias in algorithms to the risk of misuse, the ethical implications of AI are extensive and complex.

Conclusion: The future of AI in the digital age

As we move further into the digital age, AI will undoubtedly play an increasingly significant role. However, it is crucial to understand AI’s limitations and consequences. While AI has the potential to “revolutionise” our lives, it is not without drawbacks.

The future of AI promises to be exciting, challenging, and transformative. As we stand on the edge of this new era, it is important to balance our optimism with a healthy dose of realism. After all, AI is a tool created by us, for us.

In the bigger picture, understanding the limitations of AI is just as important as understanding its capabilities. It enables us to harness the power of AI responsibly and effectively. So let us embrace AI for all it is worth, while remaining mindful of its limitations!

Use it when it makes sense, and remember that it is a tool and nothing more than that.

I hope this has been easy to understand and has hopefully given you a better insight into the whole AI storm.
