New spelling dictionary for Dansk Sprognævn

When releasing a new spelling dictionary for the first time in 12 years, it naturally also has to be easy to use digitally. This was the request from the Dansk Sprognævn (DSN), which needed a new digital solution where users – ranging from school students to language professionals – could quickly and intuitively find spelling rules and entries.

Challenge

Dansk Sprognævn needed to make the digital version of their spelling dictionary much more user-friendly for their many daily visitors. In addition, they needed a new, attractive website.

Plan

The project was carried out using an agile approach, and we maintained close dialogue with the Dansk Sprognævn throughout the process. This allowed us to deliver continuous partial releases and make adjustments along the way.

Result

The result was a new spelling dictionary with a very fast and user-friendly search function. In addition, we designed and developed a new website that supports the Dansk Sprognævns visual identity.

The challenge

The dictionary should fully exploit the digital possibilities

As a state research institution under the Ministry of Culture, the Dansk Sprognævn needed a new digital solution that could support their work in communicating and developing the Danisk Sprognævn.

Previous digital editions of the dictionary were, in practice, merely copies of the printed version. The new platform, ro.dsn.dk, is instead adapted for digital use and gives both new and experienced users the opportunity to find information quickly and efficiently – with functions that make it easy to customize the display as needed.

Behind the 67,500 headwords and 11,500 composition examples lies a new search engine, built with Elastic Search – a technology that makes it possible to find precise results lightning fast, even in large amounts of data.

The solution is developed in WordPress and Laravel, where Laravel handles the communication with the Dansk Sprognævns database and ensures that searches run quickly and stably. The result is a platform where both new and experienced users easily find what they are looking for – including all the country’s schools.

In addition to the search engine, we have designed and developed the entire dsn.dk – with a new visual identity that matches the Dansk Sprognævns professionalism and purpose.

A close and long-term collaboration

The collaboration with the Dansk Sprognævn has been close and well-functioning from day one. We have had ongoing dialogue about both the technical solutions and the user experience – always with a common ambition to make the dictionary more accessible. DSN has been a strong and proactive sparring partner, who has provided clear direction and professional input along the way.

We have now worked together for over four years, and the collaboration is thriving. We are continuously developing the platform and launching new initiatives – always with a focus on making the language easier to work with for those who use it every day.
