Digitalisering

Why is it important to start with an MVP in software development and digitalisation?

When working with web and product development, it is important to start by building an MVP, or “Minimum Viable Product”. This is a simple version of the product that includes the most basic functions and characteristics needed to solve a core problem.

Why start with an MVP?

I usually say the following to our product owners and developers:

“Customers only know what they want once you show them what they do not want.”

What does that mean? It means that it is only once we have outlined or developed what our customers do not want that they can clearly explain what they do want. That is why it is always about creating a starting point—and then a new starting point from there.

There are several good reasons to start with an MVP.

Here are 5 benefits and strong reasons to do so—the ones I consider most important. I have also created an overall overview of the pros and cons of an MVP.

1) Reduced risk and costs

One of the biggest advantages of starting with an MVP is that it reduces the risk and costs associated with software development. The smaller your feature scope, the fewer risks you will need to manage.

By focusing on the most important functions at the beginning, you can minimise the costs and the time it takes to develop and test the product.

This means you can get a product to market faster and start seeing how it is received by customers.

2) Faster feedback loops and iterations

With an MVP, it is easier to collect feedback more quickly from customers and users in each iteration or sprint.

This makes it possible to identify what works well and which areas require improvement.

The feedback can then be used to make adjustments and improvements, enabling us to respond quickly to customers’ needs and expectations. Align expectations, align expectations, align expectations.

3) Feature prioritisation

An MVP helps prioritise the most critical and value-creating functions in a product. By focusing on the most important functions first, you can ensure that the product solves the primary problem it is designed to solve, thereby creating value for customers.

This also makes it easier to avoid wasting time and resources on features that may not be necessary or important to the product’s success.

It can help to prioritise your features using a matrix, where you map them as follows:

  • High value / low effort
  • Low value / low effort
  • High value / high effort
  • Low value / high effort (Please do not build these features…)

4) More efficient product development

By starting with an MVP, you can build and improve the product continuously.

This enables the development team to work more efficiently and focus on delivering new features and improvements based on customers’ needs and feedback—not what we all think, but do not actually know.

This approach helps ensure that the product evolves in line with the market’s needs and expectations.

5) Increased focus on customer needs

An MVP helps keep the focus on customer needs and ensures that you create a product that truly solves a problem for customers.

By starting with an MVP and continuously incorporating customer feedback, you can ensure that the product remains relevant and value-creating for the target audience.

Summary

An MVP in product and software development is a smart and effective strategy that enables companies to reduce risk, costs, and time before your product reaches the market.

The MVP helps prioritise functions, gather valuable feedback from customers and users, and ensures efficient product development.

In addition, it ensures a constant focus on customer needs and creates a product that is relevant and value-creating for the target audience.

By starting with an MVP, companies can increase their chances of success and create stronger, more robust products that meet their customers’ needs and expectations.
