What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are automated, AI-generated answers that appear at the top of the search results—typically before the organic links. They are Google’s attempt to give users a direct answer to complex questions, without requiring them to click through to a page. It is Google Featured Snippets on a whole new level.

What exactly are these AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are a new layer on top of classic search. Instead of simply listing links to websites, Google is now trying to answer directly—using its own AI model.
Google AI Overviews are one of the things referred to as “GEO” (Generative Engine Optimization).
Here is how it works:
- A user asks a question (e.g., “How do I start an email campaign?”)
- Instead of just links, Google generates an AI-based explanation
- The answer is pulled from multiple websites—often with source references
- It is presented at the top of the search results—before ads, before the “normal” results, before everything
It all happens lightning-fast, and it fundamentally changes how people interact with search results.

A new reality for search
It may look like just another box at the top. But it is a major change to Google’s core product:
📈 It changes who gets traffic—and how

What do you gain from rankings in Google AI Overviews?
You do not necessarily get clicks just because you are mentioned in an AI Overview.
And it is important to understand: AI Overviews are more about exposure than clicks.
But here is what you can gain from it:
1. Visibility at the top
Even if you do not get the click, you are “part of the conversation”. Your data, your copy, and your structure are used as the basis for the answer.
If Google mentions your page as a source, you get:
- The opportunity to dominate new SERPs
- Exposure to users
- Branding through visibility
2. Authority in Google’s eyes
If Google chooses to use your content in an AI Overview, it is a seal of quality.
It shows that:
- You have content that answers questions precisely
- You structure your content so the AI can read it
- You are a source Google trusts
This can indirectly lift your rankings in the rest of the search results.
3. Long-term SEO advantage
Google learns from which sources it uses.
If you are included in the AI answers again and again, you build a kind of “content reputation”. It is not something you can measure in GA4, but it happens under the hood.
Think of it as modern topical authority—just through an AI lens.
What do Google AI Overviews mean for your rankings?
The short answer: It changes the rules of the game—but not the entire game.
Let’s unpack that a bit:
1. The old principles still work
If you previously:
- Ranked for Featured Snippets
- Appeared in People Also Ask
- Had clear, structured answers
…then there is a good chance you will still rank—just in a new context.
AI Overviews are built on the same core principles:
- Relevance
- Clarity
- Structure
- and Schema Markup!
2. It is (still) about structure
By structure, we mean in your text—make it easy to scan and read. Do not write long, convoluted sentences or create huge paragraphs.
Use instead:
❌ Here is what the AI does not understand:
“Our holistic approach to email marketing balances creative strategy with analytical output, ensuring synergy between channel and user flow.”
✅ Here is what the AI loves:
“How to create an email campaign:
- A/B test content
- Define target audience
- Choose an email platform
- Write converting subject lines
- Plan sending frequency”
3. Content must be more machine-readable
Do not forget: The AI scans—it does not read. It wants:
- Bullet lists
- Clear headings
- Tables
- Short paragraphs
- One point per paragraph
This is not only for robots. It is also better for your human users. Win-win.

4. Click-through rate will change
Let’s be honest.
If Google has already answered the user’s question in the AI box—why would they click?
It means:
- You will get fewer clicks on certain searches
- But you can get better-qualified clicks (from people who want to know more)
So yes, your traffic will change—but it is not necessarily a catastrophe. We are curious to see whether it also changes Google’s RankBrain algorithm. But only time will tell.
Who should do something about Google AI Overviews?
It is tempting to say: “Everyone.”
But let’s be a bit more nerdily precise:
- You, who work with SEO and content
- You, who sell complex products
- You, who compete on expertise
- You, who are used to Featured Snippets
1. You, who work with SEO and content
If you work with content strategy, SEO, or performance marketing, you need to understand AI Overviews.
This is not just another Google feature—it is:
- A new way to compete
- A shift in how content is presented
- A new way to be found
2. You, who sell complex products
AI Overviews especially come into play for “how-to” searches and complex questions. If you sell something where the target audience searches with longer queries—for example:
- “How do I choose the right CRM solution?”
- “Which marketing automation tools are available?”
…then you will increasingly be filtered through AI.
3. You, who compete on expertise
If you position yourself on knowledge, thought leadership, or specialised advisory services, AI Overviews will determine who appears to be the expert in Google’s eyes.
This applies especially to:
- Niche shops
- Consultants
- B2B companies
- SaaS
4. You, who are used to Featured Snippets
If you have already worked on winning Featured Snippets, you are ahead. Many of the same tricks work:
- Use schemas and bullet lists
- Use questions as headings
- Answer directly under the heading
- Create step-by-step guides
TL;DR
Google AI Overviews are not just another search engine feature—it is a significant change in how search works.
But it is not rocket science.
It is about:
- Writing clearly
- Structuring smartly
- Delivering value without fluff
It requires you to forget the academic and the corporate.
And instead write for a machine that scans—and people who skim.
- Google AI Overviews are AI-generated answers shown at the top of the search results
- They draw on your content—if it is structured and precise enough
- It changes click patterns, but is built on familiar SEO principles
- You can still win if you adapt your content structure
- It is especially important for those working with SEO, B2B, guides, and complex products
