What is local SEO, and how does it work?
Local SEO works by optimizing your own website across the internet based on certain local factors, in an attempt to tell search engines that you have a local presence.

When working with local search engine optimization, you ensure that your website is found for local keywords. A local keyword is a term that indicates people are searching for something in the local area. This could be keywords such as “plumber horsens”, “shoe store frederiksberg”, etc.
As more internet traffic comes from mobile devices, local search engine optimization is also starting to become more important. In the past, much happened in front of a computer, whereas today many of our searches on search engines happen on the go, i.e., via a mobile device.

Depending on where the mobile device is located, different results will provide the best experience. For example, if you search for an “Italian restaurant” while visiting Copenhagen, it is not much help if Google shows you results from Slagelse, where you live.
Types of local searches
To understand how to optimize with local SEO, you need to understand the different types of searches that exist in local search.
There are 3 basic types of local searches:
- You are in Odense and search for: “Children’s clothing store in Odense”. Here, Google can easily understand that you are looking for a children’s clothing store in Odense.
- You are in Odense and search for: “Children’s clothing store in Nyborg”. Now Google must determine that you are looking for a children’s clothing store in Nyborg—even though at the time of the search you are in Odense.
- You are in Odense and search for: “Children’s clothing store”, without specifying any location. Even if you do not specify your location in your search, Google can still figure out the intent behind the search, as you have enabled location services on your mobile device.
Do you get results with local SEO?
Local SEO has several advantages—not only in terms of search engines choosing to show you in nearby areas, but also in terms of optimizing so consumers can more easily find where you are located.
Local search engine optimization will technically enable you to increase your exposure (visibility) on Google, which will benefit your ability to get more visitors and thereby greater conversion opportunities.
Guide to local SEO optimization – organic
- Update your website with address, opening hours, contact details, and any branch addresses
- Create a local business Schema Markup (Not sure how? Read more about how to add structured data to your website)
- Create a business profile on Google My Business
- Make sure that information sites such as krak.dk, virk.dk, etc. have the correct information, such as phone number, address, etc.
How does Google My Business help with your local SEO?
Google My Business helps your business appear in local search results. That is, when users search for something in your area where your business or store exists.
If, for example, you have a hairdresser in Odense, your salon can appear in local SEO when users search, for instance, “hairdresser Odense”. What you need to consider is that competitors certainly want to be found for the same searches. Therefore, a well-maintained and continuously updated Google My Business profile is the best way forward to outperform your competitors’ Google My Business profiles.
Example of a Google My Business listing
Google My Business is the small business panel you can see on the right-hand side of Google’s search results. If several businesses are competing for the same placement, the strongest one will be at the top, and the others will appear in a drop-down list.

Optimizing Google My Business
It is important to keep your profile updated with the correct information. This includes everything from address, phone number, offerings, services, opening hours, posts, images, etc. As many people use Google Image Search today, it is recommended that the image file contains a relevant keyword, as this will increase exposure (visibility) on Google by displaying your images on the profile.
If you do a good job with your Google My Business, your Local SEO strategy will pay off.
Good advice for maintaining Google My Business
- Update opening hours if they change
- Create products, with a link to the correct page on the website
- Optionally use UTM codes – for desired traffic tracking
- Post updates continuously. This could, for example, be offers, news, extra focus this month, etc.
